About Us...
Eco-friendly and in line with the slow-fashion movement, this means handmade, sustainable clothing, far from the hazards of mass production. Fabrics made from natural fibers for clothing that combines simplicity and elegance, proudly made in Quebec.
Founded in 2002...
in Shawinigan by Mario , Abaka is one of the first eco-responsible clothing companies in Quebec. In 2010, Karine , also from Shawinigan, joined the adventure and brought, in addition to her scissors, her touch of originality combining comfort and the unique style that is the house's signature.
Our little team!
At Abaka, we don't just wear one hat—we cut, we sew, we pack... and we help each other along the way.
Our strength lies in our versatility. Each team member is involved in several stages of the creative process, depending on their talents, availability, and the moment they're in.
The origin:
Abaka comes from the indigenous name abaca, which means Manila hemp in Tagalog, a language spoken in the Philippines. In the early 2000s in Asia, Mario discovered hemp clothing. Since the supply was very limited, upon his return to Quebec he decided to create the Kaméléon pants , which are still among the products offered.
A production almost entirely made in Quebec, if not in Canada! The cutting and design of all our clothes is done in our workshop-boutique in Shawinigan and the making by seamstresses and tailors at home and in factories in the region. Some products are made in Ontario (especially corporate products).
